Fun. - We are Young (Featuring Janelle Monae)

In high school one of my favorite pass times was to attend music shows…this ranged from local bands playing at the Pheonix or Clo’s Grill to making the trek into the big city for the mainstream names. It was during one of these treks to San Francisco that a couple of my closest friends and I “discovered” an Arizona indie band opening for Something Corporate.

The Format, became an instant obsession of ours and their CD held a permanent spot in the CD player of my 1982 Honda Accord (AKA the “Silver Bullet”). Over the years we paid close attention to the band, attending their California shows and purchasing their breakup themed albums. Sadly, we were left living in the past since 2008 when the band broke up…..until now.

Although “Fun.” was formed in 2009, it was only last week that the band made it’s way onto my radar. In similar fashion, a friend of mine had been at a show in the city and the opening band made an impression on her. She shared her new found love for the band and after I listened to the first song that came up in Spotify, I realized it was the same Nate Ruess that I had been listening to for the past 8 years. The musical style even picks up where The Format left off. The only downside is that I am late to the game and Fun. is already featured in commercials, selling out shows in San Francisco, and costs 3x’s as much to see them…Sigh…

This post is dedicated to those 4 high school gals who scoured the Filmore for crumpled set lists, asked clean up crews for broken drum sticks/guitar picks, and waited hours after the music stopped for a chance to meet the emo musicians we had posted on our bedroom walls.
